Martin Neilan, aviation Director

The Red Sea International Airport project is a cutting-edge development situated near the Red Sea coast, comprising a masterplan with a single runway, airfield works, a main terminal, air taxi terminal, and various ancillary buildings. The airport is a vital component in supporting the construction of numerous luxury resorts and hotels across 22 coastal islands and the surrounding area.

Serving as a cornerstone for Saudi leadership’s vision of diversifying the economy through eco-tourism and hospitality, the airport’s strategic location allows for efficient accessibility for approximately 80% of the global population.

The Design

The airport's design showcases five dune-like pods inspired by the desert landscape, serving as upscale lounges and restaurants that can operate independently to conserve energy during off-peak times. Passengers enjoy a luxurious experience akin to private aviation. Shaded 'wadi' gardens offer travellers a tranquil break between pods, leading to a Welcome Centre, resembling luxury resorts, equipped with cutting-edge technology and personalized services before boarding electric vehicles to their final destinations.

Sustainability

The Red Sea International Airport is committed to sustainability, aiming for LEED Gold certification through various strategies in construction and operations management. Utilizing smart technology, the airport monitors environmental impact and addresses over-tourism while providing personalized traveller experiences. Partnering with The Red Sea Development Company (TRSDC), the airport aims for a 30% net conservation benefit by 2040, supported by the world's largest battery storage facility for 100% renewable energy.

Pascall+Watson's redesign focuses on efficiency, achieving impressive results like an 85% reduction in steel tonnage and full approval from authorities.

The Red Sea International Airport stands as a testament to innovative design and sustainability. Its unique aesthetic elements and commitment to environmental initiatives set a new standard for future airport developments worldwide.
